VIU’s View Gallery presents Kashmir Lesnick-Petrovicz’s Guardians of Land, Life, Seeds and Love

An artist talk is at the gallery on Wednesday, February 28 at 1 pm.

 In 2023, Queen Elizabeth Scholar and photographer Kashmir Lesnick-Petrovicz spent three months in South Africa to complete her internship in Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) Global Studies program. 

As a communications intern, she worked for the non-profit Trust for Community Outreach and Education (TCOE), documenting their work with rural farming communities. This exhibition follows her journey through a series of photographs, videography and writing about her experience with TCOE.

The exhibit is on display at VIU’s View Gallery until February 16.

Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) View Gallery is honoured to host ᐹᑭᒋᐦᒉᐤ" pâkicihew (she has swollen hands), an installation by Nanaimo-based artist bailey macabre, organized by the Nanaimo Arts Council and curated by Amber R. Morrison.

A closing reception and artist talk is on February 15 from 5 to 7 pm at the gallery. The exhibit runs until February 16.

Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) View Gallery is excited to host OCTAD, Art and Community, an exhibit featuring exciting new artwork from eight Nanaimo and mid-Island-based artists. 

The exhibit runs from October 12 to December 8. An opening reception takes place Thursday, October 12, from 5 to 7 pm. Everyone is welcome.

Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) View Gallery is honoured to host an exhibition by Indigenous artist Taryn Walker from February 16 to April 7.

With their exhibition Echoes From a Time Not Yet Here, Walker will bring their engaged imagination, compassion and sensitive touch to the drawings preserved in wax, large-scale wall drawings, and the video and field recordings that they will share with us for the next several weeks.

View Gallery presents Cindy Stelmackowich – Trenched

The exhibit runs from September 15 to November 11.

Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) View Gallery is excited to welcome Ottawa-based sculptor Cindy Stelmackowich to present new works in her exhibition Trenched. The projects explore notions of care and violence as each relates to the history of medical advancement and war.

Trenched runs from September 15 to November 11, with an opening reception on September 15 at 7 pm at View Gallery on the Nanaimo campus (Building 330). An artist talk takes place on September 16 from noon to 1 pm in Building 355, Room 203.

VIU’s View Gallery presents Photo Salon 2022 hosted by Harbour City Photography Club

After a two-year hiatus, the Nanaimo Harbour City Photography Club’s annual photo salon is once again on display at Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) View Gallery. The exhibit, Photo Salon 2022, features some of the Island’s best photography.   

VIU’s The View Gallery Presents Escape Artists

Bachelor of Arts Major in Studio Art graduating student exhibition runs from April 20 to May 13.

After a year of taking studio art classes online, the 11 students in this year’s graduating student exhibition Escape Artists hit the ground running last September – challenging themselves in the final year of their Vancouver Island University (VIU) undergraduate degree. The result is the diverse collection of artworks we see in their graduating exhibition.
