Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) View Gallery is excited to host OCTAD, Art and Community, an exhibit featuring exciting new artwork from eight Nanaimo and mid-Island-based artists.

The exhibit runs from October 12 to December 8. An opening reception takes place Thursday, October 12, from 5 to 7 pm. Everyone is welcome.

The artists in this collective meet regularly in each other’s studios to discuss and critique each other’s work. This network of support is important for artists not living in large urban centers, to stay connected and activated by the critical peer-to-peer support they share with one another. It is also a model worth celebrating and highlighting for students the Visual Art program at VIU, to stress the importance of creating your own creative networks post-art-school-graduation.

OCTAD presents works in installation, painting, collage, textiles, drawing, printmaking and sculpture in this diverse and stimulating exhibition. It features the work of Peter Achurch, Laurel Karjala, Tony Martin, Donna Mattila, Donna Nona, Ted Polkinghorne, Heather Thomas and Denise Tierney.

The View Gallery is VIU’s contemporary art gallery on VIU’s Nanaimo campus, which is built on the traditional unceded territory of the Snuneymuxw people.

The gallery presents a spectrum of visual art and design, made by professional artists, students and community members. A non-commercial site, the gallery presents a mixture of programming and art events that range from curated solo and group exhibitions, touring exhibitions and annual showcases of student art. The View Gallery is run and staffed by faculty members and students in the Art and Design department, within the faculty of Arts and Humanities.

The View Gallery is open Tuesday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm during exhibits. It is in Building 330, 900 Fifth Street, Nanaimo, BC. Entrance 5D.
