VIU’s View Gallery presents Jim Holyoak: Arborescence

The exhibition runs from February 17 to April 9 with a virtual opening reception on February 17.

Working primarily in drawing, Jim Holyoak creates all-immersive environments that envelope the gallery walls in lush and, at times, decrepit ecosystems of forest, jungle and glade. Working from field sketches, memory, fantastical dreamscapes and myth, he renders his research on a massive scale on rolls of drawing paper that completely cover the gallery walls.

Pursuing a lifelong passion for art

Pam Vickars has always been passionate about art, but a demanding career and busy family life left little time for her to pursue it in depth.

“I took pottery, a few crafts and interior design in continuing education classes and really enjoyed them. I had this vision that when I retired I would pursue painting, which I foresaw taking more time,” says Pam, a VIU Bachelor of Arts student.

Figuratively Speaking: A Journey Through Movement

Vancouver Island University’s the View Gallery is excited to present an exhibition of painting and sculpture reflecting the themes of both figural work and movement.

Through the intriguing work of four accomplished and varied artists, human movement is portrayed on a number of levels, from both internal and external perspectives.

The View Gallery’s latest exhibit, Puzzle: An Exhibition of Student Drawings, asks questions about who we are, how we got here and how we express ourselves.

The exhibit focuses on routes   ̶  how we get to our destination or travel through life; and roots  ̶ where we come from and some of the social, cultural and political influences in our lives.

Exhibit Showcases Sustainable Alternatives to wasteful Product Packaging

VIU Graphic Design students display consumer-conscious packaging during Unwrapped at The View Gallery, on until December 1.

Is product packaging nothing but beautiful garbage?

It’s a question Nancy Pagé, a Vancouver Island University (VIU) Graphic Design Professor, posed to her third-year Package Studio students. Then she issued a challenge – redesign an existing product’s packaging so it is more ecologically responsible.

Alum of the Month: Denise Tierney, Gem Chang-Kue and Nan Goodship
