VIU’s Bobbie Taylor named CCAA Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year

Bobbie Taylor of the Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners has been named the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year.

Taylor was honoured at the 2023 CCAA Women’s Soccer National Championship, hosted by Holland College.

Pushing the boundaries of what is possible

Members of the Vancouver Island University community may remember Kayla Passmore for her role as team captain of the Mariner’s women’s volleyball team, helping to lead her team to four national championship victories. But she was an active member of the VIU community in many other ways, organizing major events, leading tours and helping new students in residences.

VIU women’s volleyball team seeks national title on home turf

The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners women’s volleyball team will look to make history when they host the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women’s Volleyball National Championship this month.

The team has won the last four CCAA National Championships and hopes to become the first team to win five in a row at this year's tournament from March 8 to 11.

Alum of the month: Douglas Groenendijk

Since graduating in 2019, Douglas Groenendijk has appeared on the reality TV series, Farming for Love, and started developing business plans to start his own farm, Legend Dairy Farms.

Groenendijk graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration, Major in Finance. He was a right-side hitter for the Mariner men’s volleyball team. And during his time on the team he received the 2019 PACWEST Championships Most Valuable Player, Championships Semi-Finals Player of the Match, and First Team League All-Star. The Mariners won gold at PACWEST in 2019 and silver in 2018.
