Mariners women's volleyball team has won the last four consecutive CCAA National Championships and looks to become the first to win five straight.

Vancouver Island University (VIU) and the Mariners will host the 2023 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Women's Volleyball National Championship in 2023, the CCAA announced today.

The VIU Mariners women's volleyball program has won the last four CCAA National Championships and will look to become the first team to win five in a row when the tournament takes place from March 8-11.

VIU last hosted the women's volleyball national tournament in 2012, and is fresh off of hosting the CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship this past March.

“We believe we have demonstrated our ability to host an exceptional event,” said Danielle Hyde, Director, Athletics & Recreation at VIU and the Tournament Chairperson. “And we also want the opportunity to host another CCAA Championship as our Women’s Volleyball program goes on their ‘drive for five’.”

Since 1978, only RSEQ schools Cégep de Sherbrooke and Cégep Garneau have also managed to win four CCAA women's volleyball national championships in a row, but no team has accomplished a five-peat.

"The CCAA is thrilled to have the opportunity to return to Nanaimo and the reigning four-time national champion Mariners aren't your average hosts," said Beth Clark, CCAA Women's Volleyball Convenor. "Danielle and her team at VIU will also be focused on delivering an athlete-centered championship that will be memorable for all participants."

The tournament will feature eight teams from across Canada: conference champions from the PACWEST, Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC), Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC), Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA), Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec (RSEQ), and Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) as well as a wildcard team and the host Mariners.
