VIU partners with brewery to raise awareness about ocean research

The special-made brew has a unique ingredient, algae, that sets it apart and pays homage to research at Deep Bay.

Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) Deep Bay Marine Field Station and Love Shack Libations are brewing up awareness about climate change research.

VIU biology professor restoring one of Canada’s most threatened ecosystems on Nanaimo campus

The Garry oak ecosystem is home to many species at risk in British Columbia.

One of Canada’s most threatened ecosystems – the Garry oak – is coming to life on VIU’s Nanaimo campus.

VIU employees, students and community volunteers have maintained a Garry oak ecosystem restoration plot since 2021. The 500-square-metre plot is located west of Building 470 near the top of campus. Dr. Caroline Josefsson, a VIU Biology Professor and botanist, oversees the project.

How honeybees are harmed by climate change

Fourth-year VIU Geography honours student Sierra De Buysscher-Nailor has taken a special interest in understanding climate change.

An aspiring beekeeper, Sierra wants to develop a better understanding of the risks she will be facing in upcoming years as she starts her beekeeping journey. She is researching the impacts of climate change on the health and habitat of the western honeybee.

VIU researchers measure methane at Alberni Valley Landfill

Student researchers gain valuable hands-on experiences while helping to fight climate change.

Methane is more potent than carbon dioxide and reducing or eliminating emissions is a critical step to help fight climate change.

Researchers at Vancouver Island University (VIU) are working with the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District to monitor the Alberni Valley Landfill to find methane hot spots. This information will help the regional district pinpoint where the methane is coming from and make decisions on how to mitigate it.
