VIU Mariners soccer player receives CCAA Torchbearer Scholarship

Vancouver Island University (VIU) Mariners Women's Soccer athlete Shea Battie is a recipient of the CCAA Torchbearer Scholarship for 2023 for her work in helping to build peace through play.

Alum of the Month: Dr. Serene Kerpan

When Dr. Serene Kerpan returned to Vancouver Island University this fall to teach and conduct research in the Kinesiology program, she was joining professors who had mentored her when she was a student at VIU years ago. Kerpan graduated from VIU in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, double majoring in History and Sport, Health and Physical Education (SHAPE, now the Kinesiology program).

Battling racism and discrimination with art

What began as a way to combat feelings of isolation and boredom during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic has now morphed into a budding side business for Elise Cole.

Elise is a second-year Kinesiology student at VIU and says it was a photo contest offered as part of the university’s 2021 Create Conference that prompted her to pursue her artistic side.

“I’ve always loved artwork and painting,” she says.

Les Malbon, Professor of Kinesiology at Vancouver Island University (VIU) has fond memories of when he was a student in the Physical Education program in 1974 – when Malaspina College was operating out of the old Nanaimo hospital building on Kennedy Street.
