Open House Showcases Research Initiatives in the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere

WHAT: Regional Research, Stewardship and Citizen Science Open House

WHEN: Wednesday, March 16, 2-8 pm

WHERE: Qualicum Beach Civic Centre

Alum of the Month: Kevin Gourlay

On the last day of a week-long survey this summer in Strathcona Provincial Park, Vancouver Island University (VIU) alum Kevin Gourlay made a remarkable discovery – a new Vancouver Island marmot colony.

The Vancouver Island marmot is Canada’s most endangered mammal. According to the Marmot Recovery Foundation, in 2004 there were fewer than 30 marmots remaining in the wild. Recovery efforts since that time have increased population levels to more than 200, but the mammal is still critically endangered.

Making an impact through undergraduate research

After graduating with a Bachelor of Science, Major in Biology degree last April, Marissa Wright-LaGreca immediately began working in the Centre for Shellfish Research.

She is researching the first 24 hours of shell development in Pacific oyster larvae, hoping to find out how growth is impacted by changing seawater conditions such as ocean acidification. The results of her project could help hatcheries select oysters that are more resilient to harsher ocean conditions.

Speaker Series Highlights Innovative Research in the History of Gender and Health

The Gender, Health and Social Justice Speaker Series presented by VIU and the University of Saskatchewan is offered for free via Zoom and kicks off on November 19.

A speaker series running this winter and spring will introduce attendees to the innovative scholarship being done by early-career researchers in the history of gender and health.

BC Government announces support for VIU-developed drug checking technology

Vancouver Island University (VIU) is excited to share the news that the provincial government is providing $305,000 for HarmCheck – a cutting-edge drug-checking technology that was developed at VIU.

It uses high-throughput paper spray mass spectrometry to provide rapid drug-checking and can be used on-site as a harm reduction method. HarmCheck is a collaboration between VIU and the Victoria-based Vancouver Island Drug Checking Project. The funding will support setup costs, site upgrades and research staff.
