Have you ever wondered what it’s like to have perfect pitch? Or the differences between the violin and the fiddle? Violinist and composer James Mark explores these questions and others he’s commonly asked during his spring 2023 Arts and Humanities Colloquium lecture.
Mark also delves into the background and nuances of Bach’s Chaconne for Solo Violin. Mark’s presentation culminates with a performance of the piece.
Mark studied music at Vancouver Island University, York University and CalArts. Mark has taught music at VIU for more than a decade and has performed with the Vancouver Island Symphony since 1994. He is also the writer and musical director for the Yellowpoint Christmas Spectacular.

Since 2009, Arts and Humanities Colloquium presentations have inspired conversations about ideas among members of the Arts and Humanities faculty and their communities both at VIU and in the mid-Island region. Presenters show how important the arts and humanities are to understanding today’s world.
