Dr. Sungchul Choi has joined VIU as its next Dean, Faculty of Management.
Dr. Sungchul Choi takes on important leadership role with Vancouver Island University.
Vancouver Island University (VIU) is pleased to announce that, after a competitive search, Dr. Sungchul Choi has joined VIU as its next Dean, Faculty of Management.
As the Dean of Management, Dr Choi will provide strategic and operational leadership over the administrative and academic priorities of the Faculty of Management. He will be responsible for advancing excellence in teaching and learning, research, scholarship and creative activities, and for the development, delivery and ongoing quality review of innovative programs and initiatives within the Faculty. He will assume the responsibility for providing leadership and supporting the strategic direction necessary to achieve the designated commitments in the University’s Strategic Plan: People, Place, Potential.
Formerly the Acting Chair, Associate Professor, and Professor at the University of Northern British Columbia’s School of Business, Dr Choi took on the role of full Chair and Professor in 2017. Dr. Choi holds a PhD in Marketing from the University of Alberta (2003), as well as an MBA (1994) and BBA (1989) from Busan National University, Busan Korea.
Dr. Choi has been actively involved in leading strategic planning initiatives both within and outside the University. He was instrumental in the creation of new collaborative business programs beyond his home institution and actively advanced excellence in both undergraduate and graduate education with an emphasis on experiential opportunities and work integrated learning.
He is the recipient of many external research grants and continues to publish papers, with his interests being sustainability, fairness in competitive markets, behavioral pricing, channels of distribution, price competition, and game theory. Dr. Choi has held multiple Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) grants, including a SSHRC Insight Grant for risk attitudes and price promotions, a SSHRC Public Outreach Grant for the commercialization of Mountain Pine Beetle Wood Concrete Products (MPBWCP), a three-year SSHRC grant for ambiguous price promotions, and a large multi-funder grant (Western Economic Diversification Canada, Northern Development Trust Initiative, and UNBC) for the marketability of MPBWCP.
Dr. Choi has been the recipient of several awards and honours over the course of his career. Most recently, these have included the Undergraduate Research Experience Award (2014) and the Research Excellence Award (2012), both from the University of Northern British Columbia.
Additionally, Dr, Choi has worked with multiple professional designations including CPA (Chartered Professional Accountant), CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst), CPHR (Chartered Professional Human Resources), CIM (Canadian Investment Manager), CHIM (Canadian Health Information Management), CPRS (Canadian Public Relations Society), and SCMP (Supply Chain Management Professional).
Dr. Choi’s appointment commenced on July 1, 2023 and we welcome him to the VIU campus community.
