Tragic News

A Message from Dr. Deb Saucier, VIU President and Vice-Chancellor

It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we must inform our VIU community of a tragic car accident that occurred yesterday and has resulted in the death of one student and serious injury of another, both from our Automotive program.

I encourage everyone to check in with one another and keep an eye out for those who may be in distress. We are a close-knit community and when these types of tragedies occur it impacts each of us a little differently. I encourage you to do what you need to do to take care of yourselves.

Counselling and other services for students will be provided in VIU’s Student Affairs (Building 200, Third Floor). Counsellors have cleared their schedules all day today and tomorrow. Again, please reach out if you need to. Support for employees is available today in Building 180, Room 137, and at any time through Homewood Health by calling toll-free at 1-800-663-1142.

We know this tragedy has occurred at a stressful time of year. For students, If you feel unable to write your exams or you need to talk to somebody, please connect with your professors and they will make accommodations.

Keep the family and friends impacted by this tragedy in your thoughts and, if it’s part of your tradition, prayers. Let’s continue to move forward with compassion and support for each other.
