Alum of the Month: Chyanne Trenholm

When the mountains call, Chyanne Trenholm answers. The outdoor adventure enthusiast likes to go on long hikes and rock climbing adventures in her spare time. Luckily the VIU Bachelor of Tourism Management alum’s job as marketing and social media coordinator for Homalco Wildlife & Cultural Tours in Campbell River allows her to share her passion for the natural beauty around her Nation with others. Trenholm aspires to become a leader in the Indigenous tourism industry and help others looking to boost economic development in their Nations.

EXPERT COMMENTARY: VIU Recreation and Tourism Professor Joanne Schroeder says the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of access to leisure activities as an investment in the long-term health and well-being of communities.

VIU Teams Up With Community Partners to Ensure All Children Can Play

Collection boxes have been set up around Nanaimo to gather gently used sports equipment and clothing for a community Swap Meet and Fun Fair that will be held on Saturday, March 21 at VIU to level the playing field for youth.

A $12,000 Community Wellness grant from Island Health will help get gently used recreational clothing, runners and sports equipment into the hands of children who otherwise might not be able to participate in recreational activities.

VIU Mariners men’s and women’s soccer teams looking to bring home some hardware at the CCAA Nationals.

Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) men’s and women’s soccer teams will go for gold at Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Championships. Stephanie White, VIU Director, High Performance Sport, Recreation and Physical Literacy says very few programs send both their men’s and women’s teams to the Nationals.

Alum of the Month: Ebony Logins

As a young female politician, Ebony Logins is very conscious of the fact that women are not well-represented in the political sphere. To encourage more young women to enter politics, Logins, who on top of her duties as a Councillor with the District of Sooke Council is also a photographer and community school co-ordinator, is launching a women in politics photo project.
