Vancouver Island University (VIU) has updated its Jazz diploma. The diploma immerses students in the life of a working musician.
“From the moment you walk in the door, we treat you as a musician. You are a musician when you are in this program,” said Brent Jarvis, Chair of VIU’s Music department.

Alum of the Month: Keanu Ienco
Ever since he picked up a guitar at age eight, music has been a passion for Keanu Ienco, who graduated from VIU in 2019 with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies. Earlier this year, Ienco, who is Métis and part Havasupai Native American, released his debut album, Celestial Desire, which he describes as an instrumental rock record. He shares more about his inspiration for the album and how VIU helped him find his own sound.

This fall, three Vancouver Island University (VIU) drummers will attempt to merge into a single entity of sound during a performance of Nebojša Živković’s Trio Per Uno.
The piece, which requires the musicians to play on multiple percussion setups, combines quick tempos, complex rhythms and wordless vocals and syllables. Timing is crucial.

Alum of the Month: Jonathan Bauer
Moving to New Orleans gave multi-talented trumpeter and composer Jonathan Bauer the chance to hit the ground running after graduating from Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies program in 2014. Since then, he’s gotten a master’s degree, toured parts of the world, started playing with the infamous New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and recorded his own album. His secret? Staying in tune with other aspects of his life besides music.
