In 2018, Vancouver Island University established awards to celebrate excellence in community engagement and scholarship, research and creative activity to complement the existing awards for excellence in teaching design and practice. These awards align with the institution's core values of discovery, engagement, achievement and celebration as identified in the Academic Plan: Promoting and Celebrating Access to Excellence and to action #5 in the Strategic Plan: Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity.
We are inviting VIU employees to submit nominations by May 31, 2020.
The President's Awards for Community Engagement
The President’s Awards for Community Engagement recognize excellence in community engagement activities for all VIU employees. These awards publicly recognize employees at the institution for their efforts to support the University’s core commitment to engaging with the community and region as articulated in our academic plan.
Community engagement draws upon capabilities of the University’s employees and students to work collaboratively with community groups and organizations in mutually agreed projects that build collective capacity, improve well-being, and produce just and sustainable outcomes in the interests of individuals, communities and the University.
There are six award categories:
- Community-University partnership award
- Community-engaged scholarship, research and creative activity award
- Community leadership award
- Community outreach award
- Indigenous engagement award
- International engagement award
The Provost's Awards for Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity
The Provost's Awards for Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity recognize Vancouver Island faculty members for excellence in scholarship, research and creative activity. These awards publicly recognize faculty for their efforts to support the University’s core commitment to excellence in a wide range of scholarship, applied research and community engagement. There are seven award categories including:
- Undergraduate research mentor award
- Graduate student research mentor award
- Distinguished researcher award
- Collaborative research award
- Early career research excellence award
- Knowledge mobilization award
- Dean's Scholarship, Research and Creative Activity Award
