Vancouver Island University’s (VIU's) unique engineering diploma program combines mechanical, drafting and civil technologist training into one learning stream.

People with a passion for engineering looking to enter the workforce after two-and-a-half years now have the option of taking Vancouver Island University’s (VIU’s) new Integrated Engineering Diploma.

The diploma, which allows graduates to work as either mechanical, design or civil technologists, is unique in BC because it combines three streams into one program.

“The new diploma will provide needed, employable skills in civil design, computer-aided design, and mechanical technology, while emphasizing teamwork, communication and hands-on experiences,” says Dr. Brian Dick, VIU Chair of the Department of Physics, Engineering and Astronomy. “Students will be able to move quickly into the local tech sector or continue their education in such fields as engineering, interior design or computer science.”

The program was developed after considerable research into BC labour needs for engineers and technologists. The 2016 Tech Talent BC Report suggests there will be an insufficient supply of engineers and technologists. To address the shortfall the Government of BC announced funding to support 2,900 additional tech-related spaces at institutions throughout the province, including 40 spaces at VIU for the Integrated Engineering Diploma, to help produce 1,000 additional tech grads by the year 2023.

The Integrated Engineering Diploma program offers flexibility for learners, allowing them to either enter the workforce after completion or transfer to another institution to pursue an engineering degree or another technologist pathway.

Students will develop a strong foundation in engineering and gain training in computer-aided drafting; building information modelling; civil, mechanical and structural design; computer programming; applied mechanics and hydraulics; project management and more. Graduates can find employment with a wide range of employers including engineering consulting firms, fabrication facilities, heavy industry and municipal engineering departments.

Curriculum was developed in consultation with the Applied Science Technologist and Technicians of BC and the Engineers and Geoscientists of BC. It also shares a common course curriculum for first-year engineering programs in BC, allowing students the option of transferring to another institution and pursuing an engineering degree.

The Integrated Engineering Diploma launches in September 2020. Applications are currently being accepted until March 31, 2020. The diploma builds on the foundation of VIU’s successful VIU’s successful Engineering Transfer Diploma program, which has been offered since 2013.
