Fall 2021: The semester in photos

After 20 months away, our students and employees came back to our campuses and locations. They gathered, held events, and marked important occasions together. This photo album provides a look-back at the semester as it was. Most photos were taken by members of the Communications team: Jenn McGarrigle, Rachel Stern, and Eric Zimmer.

ROCKVIU

No record of the fall semester at VIU would be complete without images from RockVIU. Students across our campuses and locations enjoyed a variety of activities to welcome them to VIU. It was a particularly special year because first- and second-year students participated.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Leading up to and on the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, VIU students and employees participated in a variety of events created to observe the day. They listened to survivors, walked in solidarity, wrote messages on orange hearts, and participated in ceremony.

The 2021 VIU President's and Provost's Awards

In November, we celebrated the contributions and achievements of the recipients of the 2021 VIU President's and Provost's Awards. Excellence was recognized from all different areas of the institution, and celebrating was a great reminder of some incredible achievements throughout the 12 months since the last awards in 2020.

WorldVIU Days

Each fall, WorldVIU Days is an integral part of VIU's campus-wide learning and celebrating. This year, the hip-hop forum was back, and students had a chance to think about their education and activities in a global context.

National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

On December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, VIU and Nanaimo community members gathered at the Nanaimo campus for a vigil to honour the 14 young women who were murdered in the 1989 massacre at École Polytechnique.

Out and About

  1. There were so many wonderful moments at VIU this fall. Below are some images that remind us of a few of those moments. They include the HarmCheck announcement by Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions; the Centre for Seafood Innovation's Oyster Challenge; a funding announcement for Milner Gardens and Woodland with Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, and Sport; Halloween and the VIUSpidey; the Indigenous Speaker Series speaker Connie Walker; the student art sale, the President's Holiday Breakfast, and holiday shenanigans.
