Beyond Voices: audio media and the sound of scholarship

Robin Davies, a VIU Media Studies Professor, took audience members on an aural journey during his VIU Arts & Colloquium Series lecture, which took place on March 11.

Davies was joined by students Geneviève Johnson, Hamish McLaren and Finch Hilton, and the presentation included examples from the classroom and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Davies studied Double Bass and Music Technology at McGill’s Schulich School of Music. His interests include using the human voice in auditory storytelling, sound design for visual art, the construction of software-based musical instruments for live electronic music performance and helping others embrace technology in their creative endeavours. Davies’ sound design and remix work can be heard on releases from six records, maple music, ad noiseam, Phoenicia Publishing, and Sunchaser Pictures, and as chaonaut on SoundCloud.  He currently composes and performs as part of the multimedia collective Meridian.

Since its beginning in 2009, the Arts and Humanities Colloquium presentations have facilitated conversations about ideas among members of the Arts and Humanities Faculty and their communities both at VIU and in the mid-Island region. Presenters have shown how important the arts and humanities are to understanding today’s world.
